Fennel objects to distribution of party affiliation mailings in Montgomery County

Mark Fennel (R-Silver Spring), the GOP nominee to replace the late Marilyn Praisner (D) on the Montgomery County Council, District 4, issued a statement yesterday objecting to the distribution of what his campaign called "an unnecessary 4-page letter to 90,000 plus voters in council District 4 to try to stimulate voter turnout for Don Praisner," his Democratic opponent in Tuesday's special election.

The issue revolves around the Montgomery County Board of Elections sample ballots, which include the candidates' names, but not party affiliation.

Today, the county board of elections began distributing the mailings to District 4 residents, which Fennel called "a political waste of the taxpayers' money."

The county is heavily Democratic-likely the main reason why Fennel voiced his concern.

Montgomery County teachers association to remain neutral on slots

The debate on whether the state should legalize the release of up to 15,000 slot machines at racetracks and other locations throughout Maryland took another turn yesterday when the Montgomery County teachers association announced that they would remain neutral on the November referendum.

The Montgomery County Education Association's (MCEA) Representative Assembly voted Wednesday to remain neutral, breaking with the Maryland State Teachers Association, who endorsed the proposal as a way to fund education in March. The MCEA represents approximately 12,000 teachers.

Another state superdelegate goes for Obama

John GageJohn GageUnion leader John Gage, president of the American Federation of Government Employees and a Maryland Democratic superdelegate, announced his support for Sen. Barack Obama this morning, AP reports.

Gage's endorsement came with that of his approximately 600,000-member union of federal and D.C. government employees, of which he has been president since 2003.

In a statement, Gage said, "Our people, I think, recognize the enthusiasm and vitality behind Senator Obama's campaign."

He also expressed an anxiousness for the Democrats' to take on presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain.

"I think it's time we start really focusing in on McCain, who just has a terrible record when it comes to federal employees," he said.

Gage also serves as a trustee of the National Labor College in Silver Spring. He played for the ABL's Baltimore Orioles professional basketball team from 1968 to 1969.

Ehrlich spokesperson on 2010 election: ‘It’s still too early to say’

Former Gov. Robert Ehrlich: Getty Images PhotoFormer Gov. Robert Ehrlich: Getty Images PhotoDespite increasing chatter about who might be Maryland's next governor, Henry Fawell, a spokesperson for former Gov. Bob Ehrlich (R), told PolitickerMD.com today that it is "still too early to say" if Ehrlich will seek the Republican nomination in 2010.

"He is very busy building the law firm and hitting the speaking circuit," Fawell said about Ehrlich, who served as governor from 2003-2007 and was defeated in the 2006 election by current Gov. Martin O'Malley (D).

In February, 2007, Ehrlich joined the firm Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, PLLC, as a founder of their Baltimore office.

Fawell said the former governor has not "set a specific time frame" to publicly declare his intentions for 2010.
