Better late than never. Well, some folks think so anyway.
The truth is, last weekend’s program featuring talk radio host Bob Ehrlich was pretty much a yawner. There was a half hour of the latest Republican talking point: “Drill Here, Drill Now. Pay Less – Drill off the Coast of Ocean City or right smack-dab in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay – We Don’t Care” (I made that last part up. But nobody said anything against it, either. Why is it always someone else’s backyard or beach off in the distance that needs to get drilled for oil?).
As best as anyone can figure opening up all this drilling might worth a few pennies off a gallon of gas – in five years. All this time BIG OIL already owns drilling leases over about 68 million acres of American land and they aren’t touching it, for some reason.
One Note of Warning: No one talked about ending the GOP sponsored, imposed and heavily lobbied (see Sen. John McCain’s top campaign advisors) “Enron Loophole” that allows commodities speculators to ramp up the price of oil. End it now and some experts say the price of oil would drop immediately by 25% to 50%.
We can be thankful that McCain’s not on that bandwagon. Well, not lately. Now McCain’s moving towards more drilling, drilling, drilling and Mr. Ehrlich is happy.
Mr. Ehrlich: “… [Senator McCain] appears to be shifting his position gradually. I’m thankful he’s doing it, by the way.”
I assume it’s also taboo for these fine Republicans to explore (No pun intended.) why Big Oil hasn’t been able to drill off the coast of Florida for the last 8 years. It seems Governor Jeb Bush liked getting elected and being re-elected and his brother George was more than willing to help him. So, no Florida drilling until Brother Jeb is out of office. I guess we’re there.
Oddly enough Floridians don’t like politicians who won’t keep their beaches clean, their tourist trade vibrant and their property values intact. Politicians like current Florida Republican U.S. Senator Mel Martinez:
“…Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., warned fellow senators not to look to the Eastern Gulf as the solution to America's energy woes.
"Martinez noted that Congress voted a year-and-a-half ago to open more than 8 million acres at the far western boundary of the Eastern Gulf.
"That area's reserves are estimated at about 5.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 1.25 billion barrels of oil.
"Although the area has been opened, Martinez said he did not know of any efforts to begin drilling.”
See that. Congress already opened up some drilling. Why not drill what they got? That’s a good question. We got no answers from Mr. Ehrlich or his guest Rep. John Shimkus from the sunny, beach filled tourist Mecca known as Illinois.
Mr. Ehrlich: “We have my former colleague, John Shimkus… one of the terrific people I have met in life…you are a recognized leader…”
It really makes no difference that Rep. Shimkus was also recognized as a member of the House GOP leadership AND Chairman of the House Page Board who was responsible for helping to cover-up or at least keep a lid on the walking “congressional page sex scandal” we came to know so well as GOP Congressman Mark Foley, another oily piece of Florida slime that nobody wanted around.
Mr. Ehrlich: “Drill now. Drill Here. Pay Less.”
Correction: Even Sen. John McCain says that’s nuts:
“I don't see an immediate relief, [but] the fact that we are exploiting those reserves would have psychological impact that I think is beneficial."
Pay no attention to the fact that Mr. Ehrlich’s law firm, Womble Carlyle Sandridge and Rice, counts among its many clients some rather BIG OIL.
Citgo? You mean the same Citgo that = Venezuela that = President Hugo Chavez?
If I was a mean-spirited Republican operative and Mr. Ehrlich wasn’t a Republican trying to “keep hope alive” I could write with glee (without being that far off) that Mr. Ehrlich is one of the American lawyers who is bought and pad for by Bush-hating, America-baiting Venezuela President Hugo Chavez.
It’s kind of true that when you hire one lawyer in a law firm, you hire them all.
But I am sure Mr. Ehrlich is not directly involved with Hugo Chavez. However, if anyone wanted to sue Citgo they couldn’t go to Mr. Ehrlich. That would be a conflict of interest.
So that makes Hugo Chavez more like Mr. Ehrlich’s ATM. Clients like Citgo/Chavez pay Womble money. Womble pays Mr. Ehrlich money. It’s not that difficult to understand.
Hey, it wasn’t that boring a show after all.
Until next week…

Ahhh...Mr. Donna Hamilton,
Ahhh...Mr. Donna Hamilton, can we please get a link for proof of Womble Carlyle Sandridge and Rice clients? Thanks. Just because you spew the company line on this, does not mean we the public have to believe it. Of course you never mention the close connections to our wonderful Governor with law firms that are funded by the well-known Irish mafia. Keep listening to the show, though, you may actually be enlightened!

McCain - Full of Whoopie Cream
Just be glad we did not end up with McCain in office, we now have Obama... We are saved.
Hmmm, yea right. All I can say is be prepared, be VERY prepared. Good luck to us all !
water damage
Mr. Ehrlich's more than $3 billion in tax hikes, 30%+ spending increases and the special-interest record of his PSC which set a 72% utility rate hike into the hard cement of Ehrlich Administration energy contracts - that have his appointee's signatures on them - can be added to the deep desire to keep deceiving the voters to this day.

Offshore Oil leases
T. Boone Pickens explained why the oil companies have not been drilling in the already leased areas. He said it is not a wise investment. There is little oil there and it is incredibly expensive to take a chance at drilling a successful well. It can cost up to $100 million for a deep water well. There have been spectacular failures where huge investments turned up nothing. The estimates of how much oil is there, is just that, an estimate.
On the other hand, he said, he was absolutely sure that the wind will be around forever and that is where he will invest his money. He said if there was a better investment in offshore oil, he would be there, but that it was not a solution to any of our present problems.
I think the reason they want new leases is that at some point in the future, it will be worthwhile to take the high cost, high risk of actually getting oil out of these very deep off-shore fields. Maybe when oil hits $300 to 500 dollars/barrel. The leases are ridiculously cheap and they want to get them now before the government figures out how valuable they will be in the future when global oil production starts on its inevitable downward slope.
This oil should not be exploited now, when we are wasting so much because of all of our inefficiencies. It will be much more valuable in the near future and should be held in reserve. A more prudent course is to spend smaller amounts of money (than it would take to drill in deep water) on renewables like wind & solar and increasing efficiency throughout our economy. That is called drilling for oil above ground.
Don't nitpick
My failure to thoroughly proof-read before hitting the submit button is evident. The word "short" was missing its "t" (read shor, yet entertaining...). My apologies to those who don't appreciate reading sub-par, Paulson-ish work, as I do. I hope that heads off any snort filled retort(s).
Bologna-man, the dark knight
"My bologna has a first name. It's D-A-V-I-D..."
One must usually find a Michael Olesker column to be so enlightened. Keep up the sub-par work. I, myself, must return to my job and reality after this shor, yet entertaining side trip to Lib-world, East.
Lets talk issues!
What are the platforms of the candidates for the MD Cong 1st district?
What are their positions on the extremely important issues that face the citizens of Maryland as we proceed into the future?
What are they claiming to be able to accomplish in the first 12 to 24 months?
With whom will they work to compromise and move forward legislation that will truly offer successful solutions to deep problems in our economy, universal health care, development of alternative sources of energy, saving the Social Security and pension system, to name just a few.
This site was listed on Google News this morning because on candidate has raised more money than the other. The comments I've read this morning so far deal with personal attacks of the previous and current Maryland governor.
We are all tired of the old song and dance.
We will no longer follow the old line that the other party is the enemy!
If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Get out of the way.
A hard rain is going to come.

They're just Jealous, David
These right-wing kooks are so jealous, David. They're apparently jealous of your smart, attractive and successful wife since they mention her in every other comment. God knows what they have to look at when they get home every night and feed the kids and wife down in the dungeon.
Happy to be in the world...
and happy to not be in your shoes. Have you heard the saying damned if you do, damned if you don't? Well, you should know where I am going with this one
Mr. Lewis
I do it all for you, John.
You need something to do, right?
Are you engaged?
Welcome to the world.
St. P....
And for a moment there, I thought you were going to remain adult.
I guess that's not possible.
1. Ehrlich never had "negative budget growth" in any year. Every budget he submitted exceeded spending affordability limits and had to be cut by the Democratic General Assembly. His last budget was cut to a 12.1% growth figure; at a time when he knew a looming budget deficit was in the near future.
2. Over $3 billion - the math is not hard to do. If you wish to add up all of Ehrlich's taxes, fees and tolls and show me something different I am willing to discuss - in detail.
3. 72% - On whose watch was that? Mr. Ehrlich's, of course. Sure 100% of the Republicans voted for deregulation in 1999. Sure, Ehrlich said he would have voted for it, too. He voted for it at the federal level, by the way. But then Mr. Ehrlich thought so much of deregulation he apppointed two Rrepublican Delegates - including one of the authors of the final conference committee bill - to run his PSC.
4. $5 off Mr. Ehrlich's 72% rate hike forever? Based on a merger that never happened? Forever and ever? No energy price hikes ever again? Man, that's some amazing piece of fiction. Or, it was a deal worth billions and billions. Forever? Really?
5. Ehrlich wasted money on many things. Two capitals? I don't think I ever said such.
Try again. Your batting average is a bit low.
Ehrlich's first year had
Ehrlich's first year had negative -2.5% spending "growth" (growth in quotations because that budget actually declined). When faced with a deficit and when holding a deficit, Martin O'Malley chose to raise spending a hair shy of 8% and he spent away a $1 billion surplus. What is ironic is to hear a Democrat complaining that Ehrlich "spent too much" and yet O'Malley's campaign is sending out letters saying US vs the 'Previous Administration' in funding. What, you want to attack Ehrlich for spending too much and too little? David, try again.
$3 billion in tax hikes. Wow, that sure sounds like a lot. Are you including items like tuition? Of course when you include the same fees, tuition, tolls, and tax hikes, Martin O'Malley eclipses that $3 billion number in less than 1.5 years. So David Paulson's argument is the other guy is bad, we're just worse? Sound logic their pal.
And that 72% BGE rate hike. How could that possibly be Bob Ehrlich's? We know it came about as a result of the 1999 deregulation law, a law that was passed by the Maryland General Assembly and signed by Governor Glendenning. Ehrlich was in Congress then and whether or not he supported it is irrelevant since the legislature is and was entirely under the control of Democrats. Now, under Ehrlich a deal was proposed for a merger with Florida Power&Light which would have guranteed $5 a month off electric bills forever. Consider $5 a month forever compared to Martin O'Malley's 1 time, $140 odd bucks. The difference is staggering and amounts to another $250 tax courtesy of O'Taxey.
Anyone reading this must have to wonder why Paulson can't defend O'Malley's tax hikes? Can't defend O'Malley's hand-picked PSC rubber stamping the massive BGE rates? Can't defend O'Malley's 8% budget growth in his first year when faced with a deficit compared to Ehrlich's -2.5% spending cut when faced with a deficit in his first year?
Instead, the husband of the esteemed WBAL anchor would rather reinvent history. Good think we have the internet to save his old comments.
Hey David, how's that criticism of the Capital for a Day about O'Malley coming along? You remember when you said Ehrlich was wasting tax payer money for having two capitals. What's O'Malley on now, 5?
Trust You?
I wouldn't trust you to save my life. Especially after you completely twisted the phone call from the other week.
I would think you would have something else better to do than to fantasize about Bob Ehrlich. You sit in your house with your much more talented wife and listen to his show and hang on Bobby's every word.
Why David? Why are you paying so much attention to Bob Ehrlich? I know why, because you have nothing else to talk about in your columns.
I guess you can only hide the cow patties that O'Malley is leaving you for so long that you start to run out of room. Now you are turning to stretching and spinning anything that Ehrlich says.
It looks like "someone"
It looks like "someone" found the "link" to the "Citgo" information on their own and makes a pretty good argument in Mr. Ehrlich's defense. Ordinarily, the move in this case is that no defense is needed.
Someone. We don't know who, of course.
So, nothing else in "Part 3" is contested by thee.
Anyone else feel the need to follow "someone's" lead and distract and deflect from the substance with half-truths, lies and innuendos?
But you're just keeping hope alive. I understand. So is Mr. Ehrlich's hero: "W" .
"Established in
"Established in Winston-Salem in 1876, the firm now comprises 530 lawyers in eleven offices, including Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Greensboro, Research Triangle Park, Raleigh, NC; Atlanta, GA; Greenville, SC; Tysons Corner, VA; Washington, DC; Baltimore, MD and Wilmington, DE."
http://www.wcsr.com/default.asp?id=66
A firm with 530 lawyers clearly has worse clients than "big oil," but does that mean Bob Ehrlich supports them? They also represent box stores. And does anyone know the evil thing they did with them? They made a deal with a national environmental group to help preserve land. Gosh they're so evil!
I mean, what if we reviewed all of Judge Katie O'Malley's punishments. Did any of those criminals get back on the street and offend again? And now, would this be a fair measure of attack against Martin O'Malley? Of course not.
What we have here is the reality that David Paulson has been given a singular focus: attack Bob Ehrlich. But why?
As Governor, Martin O'Malley passed the largest tax increase in state history. As Governor, Martin O'Malley's handpicked PSC rubber-stamped the massive BGE rate hikes. As Governor, Martin O'Malley presided over record spending increases in a time of year-end deficits. As Governor, Martin O'Malley has been tied to multiple land deals with campaign contributors and political allies. In two years as Governor, Martin O'Malley has spent more time out of Maryland than Bob Ehrlich did in 4 years. As Mayor, Martin O'Malley chaired the Board of Estimates that is the root of Sheila Dixon's troubles.
Let's be real, Martin O'Malley makes George Bush look like a Saint.
Doubting Moron?
You mean to say you don't trust me and a link would make it all better?
