Silver Spring, MD - Today, Rep. Tim Mahoney’s (D-FL) alleged extramarital affair and financial settlement with a former staffer came to public light.  Mahoney replaced disgraced Florida Rep. Mark Foley after a major election year sex scandal in 2006.

At that time, House Democrats criticized the GOP leadership for covering up Foley’s deviant behavior.  However, Rep. Rahm Emanuel of Illinois and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Chris Van Hollen of Maryland both admitted they had discussions with Mahoney about his personal conduct before the scandal broke.  Palm Beach County GOP boss, Sid Dinerstein, suspects that they knew of the conduct for some time.  The Palm Beach Post quoted Dinerstein as saying “Rahm Emanuel admittedly knew about this for over a year and their reaction was to help (Mahoney) with his campaign.”  Emanuel and Van Hollen work together closely to get Democratic congressional candidates re-elected.

On January 20, 2008 a recorded phone call between Mahoney and his alleged mistress revealed Mahoney saying "you work at my pleasure.  If you do the job that I think you should do, you get to keep your job. Whenever I don't feel like you're doing your job, then you lose your job.”  "You're fired," he continued. "Do you hear me?"

The woman claimed that there was another reason she was being fired.  "You're firing me for other reasons," she said. "You don't, you're not man enough to say it. So why don't you say it."

On July 11, 2008, the Crypt reported that Van Hollen and the DCCC supported Mahoney with $1.5 million in promised advertising for his campaign.

Dr. Steve Hudson, Republican Congressional Candidate for Maryland’s 8th District stated that “there should be a thorough investigation of Rep. Mahoney’s conduct.   If he acted inappropriately, and my opponent knowingly supported his bid for re-election, it shows extremely poor judgment of character and unveils a major ethical lapse that should be taken into account by voters in the 8th District of Maryland.
