The PolitickerMD.com list of the state’s MOST POWERFUL LAW FIRMS identifies the law firms in the state that carry the most political power – the most sway over the business of government and politics. We looked for the firms with the combination of political influence, marquee names, and access to policymakers at different levels of government. These lawyers understand how the inside political game is played and how to get results for their clients. As always, our lists are subjective – we welcome your comments.
Description:When Gary Alexander and James Cleaver speak, they do it for the powerful, the many, and the many powerful. Their government relations branch has had former House of Delegates Speaker Cas Taylor for four years. They have another unique trait: a staff with nearly every member a well known person throughout town. |
Description:Sheltering the members of an Ehrlich comeback campaign, the former governor and his staff were the impetus for this 132 year-old firm to create its Baltimore branch in February 2007. This is the place for anyone seeking instant access to Maryland Republican leaders. Members of this Ehrlich brain trust include communications guru Paul Schurick and finance chairman David Hamilton. |
Description:This is the other practice with a point person in every corner of power in the state. Its size and scope is known to have brought diverse interests together under its own roof. If it didn’t solve the problem, they can at least anticipate the coming political storms. |
Description:Forget Maryland – Venable is one of the most politically connected law firms in the country. But its Free State heritage and involvement in state issues keep it more in tune with Maryland than anywhere else. |
Description:When a firm this massive has a considerable amount of personnel in the state, it’s going to be a major player. Organizations like these can move mountains when they choose to. An interesting note: DLA Piper is surely Rep. Cummings’ favorite firm at the moment, as its lawyers wrote the Mitchell Report on steroid abuse in baseball. |
Description:Between campaign contributions and influence through the Maryland Trial Lawyers Association, this Timonium-based malpractice firm has a lot of swing in Annapolis. |
Description:If a Maryland pol – Democrat or Republican – finds himself facing hard time, this firm is at the top of his or her shortlist. Founder Joshua Treem has represented several high profile defendants, including the likes of Tom Bromwell and Bruce Bereano. |

Description:This practice has a strong state identity, and a PAC that gets its donations into the campaign coffers of every important politician in the General Assembly, large or small. |
Description:Not a very large practice, but they don’t need to be. These are top-notch people who know Maryland tax law inside and out and have a keen eye for the important parts before they hit the books in Annapolis. |
