Ortiz receives SEIU Health Care Workers Endorsement

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) 1199 United Healthcare Workers East, Maryland Division, has endorsed Mayor Adam Ortiz (D-Edmonston) in his bid to fill the open District 5 Prince George's County Council seat vacated by David Harrington, who replaced the deceased Sen. Gwendolyn Britt in the General Assembly.

The union also endorsed Donna Edwards (D-Fort Washington) in her successful Democratic primary campaign in Maryland’s Fourth Congressional District.

“Like Donna Edwards, Adam Ortiz is a new kind of leader in Prince George’s County,” John Reid, Executive Vice President of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, Maryland Division, said in a statement. “By putting people before politics, Adam Ortiz will be a fresh voice and a force for change on the county council.”

“I am honored to receive 1199SEIU's endorsement and appreciate their innovative approach to making a better quality of life for working people,” Ortiz said in a statement. “My mother worked three jobs to keep our family afloat so I know the issues facing working families. I am looking forward to bringing our message of empowerment to the people of the fifth district and working together to save the Prince George’s hospital.”

The issue of Prince George’s hospital remains very important in the campaign, despite the fact that Gov. Martin O’Malley and county leaders recently announced a plan to fund the hospital for two years. The plan has yet to be enacted by the General Assembly, and 1199SEIU, which represents 1,700 employees at the hospital, has vowed to monitor the situation.

“Adam Ortiz has been a great advocate for the hospitals and I know he will be a strong voice on the Prince George’s County Council,” Michael Stanard, an environmental services worker at Prince George’s Hospital Center, said in a statement. “We need leaders like him who will speak for us.”

Andrea Fletcher Harrison, a longtime aide to Harrington, Adrion Howell, a Democratic strategist, and Theresa Dudley, a member of the Prince George's County Education Association and teacher at Kenmoor Middle School, are also vying for the position.

A special primary election has been scheduled for April 1.

What About WalMart?

Adam Ortiz takes pride in being the force behind bringing another WalMart to Prince George's County. But yet he is suppose to be the labor candidate that is most concerned about the working people and middle-class. With a friend like this, who needs enemies?

With this kind of track record, I can not support Mr. Ortiz. Andrea Harrison looks like the best option and the Strongest candidate.

Republicans Backed Ortiz

Ortiz is really a great guy, but I have seen a flyer about a fundraiser that the Prince George's Republican Central Committe had for Ortiz on February 29, 2008 and that scares me.
