Happy Maryland Constitution Day

The 1776 State Constitution: Maryland State ArchivesThe 1776 State Constitution: Maryland State Archives

As we celebrate the 232nd anniversary of our nation's independence at Philadelphia tomorrow, today should be when we take note of what occured in Annapolis just prior to our country's declaration.

Wednesday, July 3, 1776 was the day on which the Maryland Convention, fed up with running the colony themselves while technically ruled by a royal governor, announced they would draft a state constitution "for the express purpose of forming a new government by the authority of the people only, and enacting and ordering all things for the preservation, safety and general weal of this colony."

Of course, the first state constitution wasn't drafted and agreed upon until later that year, but still: does any other time of year have the patriotic electricity of the July 4 weekend?

Happy Maryland Constitution Day. (And no, it's not an excuse to give state workers an extra day off).
